How do I make questionable water safer to drink?
First choose the cleanest available source. Then use a treatment that actually matches the risk. Here are the useful options before we get into the details.
What to have for emergency water treatment
Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Water Purification Tablets
This is the specific tablet we recommend, not just any “water purification tablet.” It is useful when a water system is compromised and you need a biological disinfection method without electricity or boiling.
Potable Aqua labels this chlorine-dioxide version for bacteria, viruses, Giardia and Cryptosporidium when used exactly as directed. It can also improve unpleasant taste and odor, but better taste or clearer-looking water does not prove that unknown water is safe.

For brown or cloudy water: first let sediment settle and pour off the clearer water, or pre-filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter. Then use the tablet exactly according to its package directions. The pre-filtering step removes debris, not germs.

1. Pick the cleanest source
Avoid floodwater, oily sheen, chemical odors, obvious sewage and water near industrial or agricultural contamination whenever another source exists.
2. Clear out the crud
Let muddy water settle, then pour off the clearer water. A clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter can remove more visible debris. This step does not kill germs.
3. Treat the germs
Boil, use a filter or purifier that matches the hazard, or use an appropriate disinfectant exactly according to its directions.
4. Keep clean water clean
Put treated water into a clean container and keep the dirty side of filters, hoses and vessels away from the treated water.
Filter and purifier are not the same thing
Filter
Many portable filters are excellent for bacteria and parasites but generally do not remove viruses. Check the exact product specification.
Purifier
A verified purifier can provide broader biological protection. Check the actual manufacturer's claims rather than assuming from appearance or price.
What boiling solves
For biological contamination, boiling is simple and extremely useful: a rolling boil for 1 minute kills viruses, bacteria and parasites. Above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes.
If the water is cloudy, let it settle and pre-filter visible material first. If chemical contamination is suspected, boiling is not the solution. Use another water source.

Soil can remove visible sediment, but water from a shallow hand-dug seep should still be treated as untreated natural water. Clear does not mean microbiologically safe.
I have $0 to spend. What can I use at home?
If the concern is germs rather than chemicals, a pot, safe heat source and clean storage container may already give you the strongest simple fallback: boiling. Cloudy water can first settle and be passed through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter before boiling. That pre-filter removes debris, not pathogens.
A few things worth knowing
Freezing can damage some hollow-fiber filters. Follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.
Family throughput matters. A straw is excellent for one person. Processing gallons every day is why gravity systems become much more practical at home.
No single treatment fixes everything. Filters clog, chemicals run out and boiling consumes fuel. Having two workable methods is much more useful than buying five nearly identical filters.
