Solar power bank or folding solar panel: what actually works?
If you only need to keep phones, a tablet or a USB-C laptop alive, you may not need a full power station. But the words “solar power bank” are used for some very different products.
The three versions people confuse
Best when you mainly need stored power for phones or a laptop and can recharge from the wall before a storm. Simple, compact and usually the cheapest useful solution.
Convenient in theory, but the solar surface is tiny. Treat the panel as an emergency supplement rather than assuming it can refill a large battery every day.
This is the setup we like for someone who genuinely wants portable solar. The battery can stay shaded and protected while the larger panel is positioned in the sun, and you can choose enough panel area to produce useful power.
A real example of the difference
The current Sherpa 100PD stores about 95Wh and can output up to 100W over USB-C, enough for many USB-C laptops as well as phones and tablets. Goal Zero says its Nomad 20 can solar-charge the Sherpa, with published recharge estimates around 9–18 hours depending on conditions.
That long recharge estimate is useful context. Even a real folding 20W panel is not magic. Clouds, panel angle, season, temperature and available daylight all matter.

Phone emergency backup: A small portable panel can help, especially when paired with a power bank rather than trying to charge a phone directly through changing sunlight.
Phone + tablet + frequent charging: More panel area becomes useful.
USB-C laptop: Pay attention to both the battery's USB-C output and the panel's usable output. A battery that can store enough energy for a laptop is not automatically able to recharge quickly from a small panel.
Several days of regular laptop use: You may be happier moving up to a compact 245–300Wh power station and a larger compatible panel.
