If I'm buying a generator for emergencies, should I get gas or propane?

For many households, the better question is whether you can avoid depending on only one fuel. A dual-fuel portable generator can use gasoline when it is convenient and propane when gasoline is expensive, stale, difficult to find or simply unavailable.

Fast answer: If two otherwise comparable generators are reasonably close in price, dual-fuel is often the stronger emergency choice. Propane is not automatically cheaper or more powerful. The advantage is fuel redundancy.

Why fuel choice matters during an emergency

Gasoline is normally easy to find, but storms, evacuations, power failures and transportation disruptions can create sudden local shortages. Fuel prices can also move sharply because of crude-oil markets, refinery outages, hurricanes, wars and other disruptions.

The preparedness advantage of dual-fuel is simple: you are not completely dependent on the price and availability of one fuel.

Gasoline vs propane

Gasoline: usually gives a dual-fuel generator its higher wattage rating and is easy to obtain in normal conditions. It requires more attention to safe storage and rotation.

Propane: stores well and ordinary portable cylinders are manageable for many households. Generator output is generally lower on propane than gasoline, and propane is not automatically cheaper per useful unit of electricity.

Dual-fuel: lets one machine use either. You do not need a giant residential propane tank to benefit from that flexibility.

Before buying: compare the actual running and starting wattage on both fuels. Do not buy based only on the larger gasoline number on the box.

Stretch finite fuel instead of running blindly

A generator does not necessarily need to run 24 hours a day. Some households run it during higher-demand periods, recharge batteries or power stations at the same time, then shut it down during lower-demand periods.

Refrigeration can sometimes be managed in cycles, but food temperature is what matters. Use refrigerator/freezer thermometers and food-safety guidance rather than guessing.

A useful planning question is: How many generator-hours per day does my household actually need?

What size generator do I need?

List the loads that truly need power: refrigerator, freezer, well pump, lights, internet equipment, medical equipment, furnace blower, air conditioner or RV connection. Check both normal running demand and startup surge for motors and compressors.

Then choose a generator with the correct output, voltage and connections for those loads, with enough margin that it is not operating at its absolute limit.

Portable generator safety is not optional

Gasoline and propane generators both produce carbon monoxide. Never run a portable generator inside a house, garage, basement, crawlspace or other enclosed or partially enclosed area. A cracked garage door does not make it safe.

Operate it outdoors according to manufacturer clearance requirements, away from doors, windows and vents, and maintain working CO alarms in the home.

Never improvise a connection into household wiring. Proper transfer equipment is required for powering household circuits. Backfeeding can electrocute utility workers and other people.

The generator system is more than the generator

Plan for the correct cords or transfer equipment, fuel, engine oil, operating manual, safe weather protection, CO alarms and a written startup/shutdown procedure. Make sure more than one capable person in the household knows how the system works.

Practice before storm season. Common real-world failures are mundane: cords that are too short or underrated, missing adapters, stale fuel, a machine nobody else can move, or only one person knowing the startup sequence.

What to compare before buying

Compare gasoline output, propane output, fuel consumption and runtime, weight, noise, outlets, electric start, CO shutoff, warranty, RV-ready connections if needed, and whether the generator can actually power your priority loads.

A smaller efficient generator may be better for essentials. A dual-fuel RV-ready model may be better when one machine needs to serve both home and travel. Larger is only better when the loads justify the extra fuel use, weight and cost.
